MEXT Japanese Studies Students Experience Making an Edo Furin Wind Chime

April 5, 2017

On Friday 22 nd July 2016, MEXT Japanese studies students had the experience of making Edo furin wind chimes during their off-campus training.

In Shinohara Furin Shop in Edogawa, which has been preserving the art of glass wind chimes that has been passed down since the Edo period as 'Edo furin', under the instruction of the artisans, the students experienced the manufacturing process from blowing the glass to make the shape of the wind chime to decorating the inside.

While getting a feel of the skill and technique of the artisans, as well as the difficulty and fun of painting the inside, each completed their own shiny, handmade wind chime.
