Countermeasures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection when conducting in-person classes
August 11, 2020
From the summer term starting on August 31, 2020, TUFS will be holding some in-person classes.
Please note the following precautions regarding these classes.
1. General
(1) TUFS will be implementing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection that are in line with the recommendations of such authorities as the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and the Tokyo metropolitan government.
(2) While infection-prevention measures will be implemented as explained below, it should be noted that all in-person classes will be switched to online should circumstances make it difficult to continue, such as a significant worsening of the rates of infection in Tokyo.
(3) Students and faculty are strongly urged to make use of COCOA, the COVID-19 Contact-Confirming App developed by MHLW.
2. Precautions in implementing in-person classes
(1) The following precautions will be taken in the classrooms.
- The number of attendees will be limited to half the classroom’s capacity.
- Seating will be arranged to maintain sufficient distance between students and between teachers and students.
- Classroom doors and windows will be kept open to keep the rooms well-ventilated.
- Bottles of disinfectant will be placed outside classrooms for everyone to disinfect their hands before entering.
-
(2) Students attending in-person classes are asked to take the following precautions.
- Take your temperature every day before attending classes and pay attention to your health.
- Do not attend classes, but stay home and rest if you have any of the following symptoms: cold symptoms (runny or stuffy nose, aching joints, headache, etc.), a fever of 37.5℃ or higher, a cough or sore throat, general feeling of malaise, difficulty breathing, loss of sense of taste or smell, diarrhea, vomiting, or other signs of poor health, as well as if your body temperature is higher than usual even if it is in the normal range.
- Always wear a mask or mouth shield even if you have no symptoms. (Care should be taken to avoid heat stroke when wearing a mask in hot and humid weather).
- Always follow coughing etiquette (such as coughing into your elbow).
- Before and after each class, wash hands thoroughly with soap for at least 30 seconds or apply alcohol disinfectant.
-
(3) Take the following precautions when using the common areas in the Research and Lecture Building.
- Additional sinks for washing hands will be installed in the Galleria and at the entrance to all restrooms.
- Hallways will be marked to separate people entering and leaving so as to prevent congestion.
- A thermo-sensor will be installed at the entrance on the Central Plaza side, and people who are found to have a fever will be denied entry.
-

(1) Library
- There will be strict implementation of the measures given on the Library website.
-
(2) Athletic facilities

- All in-person classes attended or taught by the infected student or teacher will be cancelled.
- TUFS will cooperate with the Public Health Center in tracing close contacts of the infected person.
- Use of relevant facilities and rooms will be prohibited while they are being disinfected.
- Depending on the situation decisions will be made as to whether the campus should be closed, and if so, to what extent and for how long.
-
In implementing the above measures, special care will be taken to ensure that there is no academic disadvantage to students diagnosed with COVID-19, their close contacts, and other students attending the same classes.
