EXTENSION OF PERIOD OF STAY: About the process

To all international students whose status of residence is "student"

Application can be made 3 months prior to the expiration of visa.

Items required for application (if status of residence is “student”).

Graduate Students / Undergraduate Students Research Students
  1. Application for Extension of Period of Stay
    ※Forms “For organization part 1 & part 2” must be completed by the Student Exchange Division. Please note that it takes 3~5 business days to issue the certificate. Be sure to give yourself enough time to apply.
  2. 1 ID Photo (4cm x 3cm, taken within 6 months)
  3. Residence Card and Student ID
  4. Certificate of Enrollment Status (issued at the Educational Affairs Division)
  5. Official transcript of academic records (issued at the Educational Affairs Division)
  6. MEXT Scholarship Certificate (issued at the Student Exchange Division) *MEXT scholarship students only*

There may be needed some other documents as the Immigration Services Bureau asks.

Handling charge of 4,000 yen (payment must be made with a revenue stamp)

Notes

*After completing the procedure for renewal of visa, please update your visa information and submit a copy of your new residence card using the web form below.

*The Student Exchange Division will issue the document “For Organization part 1 & 2” only to those with a residence status of “student”.

*For other status of residence (family stay, permanent resident, etc.), please contact the Immigration Services Agency of Japan by yourself.

*You will be considered an illegal immigrant if you overstay your period of stay by even just one day, so be sure to apply for an extension as early as possible (3 months prior to the expiration of the period of stay).
