モエデブ ワエル
We are approaching the end of the winter season here which I have to say was very cold this year with lots of snow falls. The winter semester is also ending soon and everyone is busy with exams. The academic semester here at INALCO or at any other French university consists of eleven weeks of courses which is pretty short.
During this month I was working on my interviews which will be used to develop my questionnaires. As I have stated in my presentation before leaving Japan this research will follow a most dominant combined approach in which both quantitative and qualitative methods will be used with qualitative as the dominant. Long Interviews followed by questioners to validate them will be conducted. A random sample of non immigrant French citizens from: A) a moderate size city of France where small numbers of different ethnic minorities reside; B) a big urban centre such as Paris will be selected. Moreover, a random sample of French Muslim immigrants will also be selected and interviewed. The questions will focus on key elements in my research including, integration/assimilation, "Frenchness", "la?cité", and citizenship.
I have contacted my professors by email and still waiting for their recommendations and advice regarding my interviews and my proposed method of research and analysis. After receiving their recommendations I will start testing my interviews before I will be able to use them. My main samples of interviewees will consist of university students studying in the fields of sociology or political science. This will help in better understanding the perceptions of these students on terms like, national identity, French, immigration, and integration/assimilation. Based on the data and results from the interviews, the questionnaires can then be developed to validate the data from interviews.
