On January 31, 2020, the classrooms between Prof. Nobuo Haruna of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Prof. John Kim of the University of California, Riverside (UCR) were connected for a COIL-type class for online discussion. Professor Haruna’s class was titled “The Pacific War revisited: historical research and collective memories” and dealt with the Second World War. Two classrooms discussed nation/nationalism and race/racialism based on the common reading materials. The discussion was conceptual at the beginning. The participants gradually began to open up their backgrounds or thoughts and the discussion reached notion of identity. They related academic concepts to their individual experiences or thoughts, which led to a deeper mutual understanding between the Japanese and American participants.
